TATTOO REMOVAL

Frau lässt ihr Tattoo entfernen und symbolisiert Laserbehandlungen

Tattoos will probably always be trendy – only the styles and motifs differ. But the decision for this body art is not always final. Whether it’s a youthful sin, badly drawn or simply because the tattoo is no longer appealing – there are various reasons for considering tattoo removal. Sometimes tastes change. Other times professional aspects make removal necessary. Luckily, there are effective methods nowadays. However, it requires patience. In addition, it is important to understand that tattoo removal can usually never bring back the original skin condition.

Dr Duve has been an expert in the field of laser tattoo removal for many years. Dark colour pigments in blue or black can usually be removed completely. Other treatment options include the PlexR® procedure.

How does laser tattoo removal work?

Lasers are bundled, high-energy light beams that penetrate the tissue and generate heat in the treated area. Different wavelengths are used depending on the target object (e.g. pigments, vessels, tissue). Tattoos can also be removed by laser. Ultimately, the colour pigments can be destroyed. The surrounding skin areas are spared. Next, the crushed colour fragments are transported away via the lymphatic system. Of course, it does not happen overnight: this process takes at least four to six weeks. During this time, the tattoo continues to lighten, and any scabs in the treated area heal. Tattoo removal only works over several sessions, as not all colour particles can be immediately captured and shattered by the laser beam. It takes a long time before the tattoo is hardly or no longer visible. There should be at least eight weeks between each laser treatment. There are several types of lasers that work with different wavelengths of light. They also differ in energy efficiencies. The choice of laser depends on the tattoo colour.

For whom or which tattoos is the treatment suitable?

First of all: not every tattoo can be removed completely. In general, dark tattoos with black, grey and blue pigments are easier to remove. With lighter shades, the treatment becomes more complex. White, yellow or green pigments are very difficult to completely remove. Furthermore, the success of the laser treatment not only depends on the colour but also on the composition of the tattooing agent, the puncture depth, the body part and the tattoo size. Age also plays a role, as does the patient’s skin type. The darker the skin, the more careful the laser treatment must be in order to avoid white skin spots.

Which zones/areas can be treated?

Generally, all areas of the body that have been tattooed can also be treated by laser.

What should be considered before tattoo removal?

You should avoid going to tanning studios and sunbathing for four weeks before the treatment. The same applies after the tattoo removal.

How does the treatment work?

The pain intensity varies. It can best be compared to the feeling of getting a tattoo. Cooling helps alleviate the pain; if necessary, an anaesthetic cream can also be applied. If the pain is severe, local anaesthesia is also advisable. During the treatment, Dr Duve moves the laser device slowly over the tattoo. Depending on the size of the tattoo, the duration of the laser treatment is 15 to 45 minutes per session.

What should be considered after the laser treatment?

The treated skin can also be cooled after the treatment. Tanning studio visits and sunbathing should be avoided for four weeks. Exercising and bathing are prohibited for the first few days. If itching occurs, it is important not to scratch the corresponding area. For a while after the treatment, you should use mild cleansing products and avoid vigorous rubbing when drying.

How many sessions are needed for complete tattoo removal?

How many sessions are necessary for the complete removal of the tattoo depends on the size and colours of the tattoo as well as the penetration depth. Customarily, between four and eight treatment sessions are necessary. We can give you a rough estimate after the first treatment (sometimes earlier). There should be at least eight weeks between sessions.

When will the result of tattoo removal be visible?

The first clear results of tattoo removal are usually visible after two sessions. With each treatment, the colours fade a little more.

How much does the treatment cost?

The price for tattoo removal depends on the number of sessions required. We can only give you a rough estimate of the costs after a detailed consultation.

What side effects can occur?

Tattoo removal – like other laser treatments – can be associated with some side effects. Thanks to Dr Duve’s long-standing experience, there are no serious risks to worry about. The possible side effects of tattoo removal include:

  • Redness,
  • Swelling,
  • Hypo- or hyperpigmentation of the skin in the laser-treated area,
  • Scars,
  • Blistering,
  • Scabbing.

These symptoms should subside after a few days. If scabs form, it is important not to scratch them. The aforementioned avoidance of sunlight is also crucial for a good healing process.

Tattoo removal with PlexR® as an alternative

As an alternative to laser treatment, a tattoo can also be removed by Dr Duve using the PlexR® method. This is an innovative plasma technology. A special device is used to generate an atmospheric plasma, which leads to vaporisation, which in turn triggers tissue removal. The advantage of this treatment is faster healing. Additionally, the elasticity of the skin is improved.
