Skin cancer prevention – taking action against skin changes at an early stage

DERMATOLOGY

Mann lässt sich auf Hautkrebs untersuchen und symbolisiert Hautkrebsvorsorge

First the good news: if diagnosed early, skin cancer is 100% curable. And now the bad news: the corresponding preventive care is hardly ever applied, or at least not thoroughly enough. As a result, melanoma is still on the rise in this country.

Types of skin cancer and risk groups

There are several types of malignant skin tumours. Basal cell carcinoma, also known as white skin cancer, usually only grows locally and can be treated well if removed in time. In contrast, black skin cancer (malignant melanoma) spreads to other tissues and organs.

There are certain groups of people who are particularly susceptible to developing skin cancer. These include:

  • light-skinned and light-eyed people with a tendency to sunburn,
  • people whose relatives have been diagnosed with skin cancer,
  • people who suffered frequent sunburns as a child, and
  • people with many moles.

If you belong to these risk groups, you should especially consider regular skin cancer screening. The frequency of examinations depends on the type of skin, the type and number of moles, and the age of the patient. You will be informed about this at your first appointment with Dr Duve.

Options for skin cancer screening

During this examination, it is important to observe moles thoroughly based on certain aspects:

  • A – Asymmetry: Is the mole unevenly shaped?
  • B – Boundary: Are the edges of the mole blurred?
  • C – Colour: Does the mole exhibit uneven pigmentation?
  • D – Diameter: Is the diameter of the mole more than five millimetres?
  • E – Elevation: Does the mole have elevated areas?

If any of these aspects apply, you should consult a dermatologist immediately. A medical examination is also necessary for itchy or bleeding moles.

Further skin examinations

Dr Duve also takes a close look at the skin and moles. He uses a reflected-light microscope to quickly determine if the mole should ideally be removed. Furthermore, there is video-based photo documentation. Conspicuous moles are scanned and then analysed for malignancy. By digitally storing the results, it is possible to quickly identify any changes in subsequent examinations. Take care of yourself and your skin and schedule an appointment with Dr Duve for skin cancer screening.
