Smooth, even skin thanks to laser treatment

SCAR CORRECTION

Rücken mit einer Narbe symbolisiert Laserbehandlungen

Small mishaps in everyday life, accidents or operations – scars can have several causes. They can be small or large, deep or barely visible. Depending on the type of scar and the region of the body, they can be extremely disturbing. Special creams and make-up only help to a limited extent and, above all, not permanently. However, there are effective ways to combat scars. Even if a complete removal is usually not possible, they can at least be treated so that they are hardly noticeable or show significant improvements in terms of colour, visibility and texture. Skin type and individual predisposition to wound healing also play a role.

Dr Duve has been an expert in the field of laser scar correction for over 20 years. This also applies to other treatments such as peels, etc. Different laser devices can be used to lighten or flatten the skin areas. The PlexR® procedure is also another treatment we offer. –

What is scar correction and how does it work?

Scar correction refers to the treatment of scar tissue to improve it visually. Laser treatment is a possible and effective option. High-energy light is applied to the scar tissue to brighten and smooth the area, improve the texture and make it blend in with the surrounding healthy skin. This is done by ablating the tissue, which causes new collagen to form after some time, allowing the remaining tissue to regenerate. The result is much smoother than as before. The radiation also penetrates into deeper layers of the skin, so that regeneration also occurs in these layers. Noticeable colour changes, especially redness, can also be effectively improved.

For whom is the treatment suitable?

Laser scar correction is suitable for almost all types of scars. In addition to injury- and operation-related forms, acne scars can also be treated with this method. Laser treatment is used for:

  • Superficial and pale scars
  • Bulging, very pronounced scars
  • Reddened scars.

Depending on the type and extent, fewer or more sessions are necessary. However, it must always be decided individually to what extent laser treatment is the right choice. Often a surgical intervention is recommended instead, or different methods are used in combination, for example, in the case of sclerotic scars. Sometimes, alternative methods such as peels can also be used. So-called keloid scars should be assessed very carefully. Comprehensive information and counselling are necessary here to warn against false expectations. Keloid scars have a very hard structure and can greatly reduce the mobility of affected people at the joints. In this case, surgical intervention is usually the best option. Laser treatment could be considered after the surgery.

Which zones/areas can be treated?

Generally, laser treatment can be used for scars in all areas of the body. Thus, it can be used to treat the face and body. As mentioned before, however, it must always be determined individually whether this is the only or best option. For scars on joints, the treatment plan usually starts with surgery.

What should be considered before the treatment?

Before each treatment, we have a detailed discussion with our patients. Dr Duve and his team will clarify whether and to what extent laser treatment is the right choice and what result can be expected. From four weeks before the treatment date, patients should refrain from sunbathing and going to tanning studios. Tanned skin makes laser treatment difficult or impossible.

How does the treatment work?

Laser scar correction can be described as painless, so that generally no anaesthetic is necessary. However, if desired, we can apply an anaesthetic cream or perform a local treatment. During the treatment, the laser device is slowly moved over the affected skin area. Depending on the size of the area, the application takes 15 to 45 minutes. However, it is important to remember that several sessions are usually necessary to achieve a satisfactory result.

What should I consider after the treatment?

You should also avoid the sun for four weeks after the laser treatment. Generally, you will be able to socialise again immediately. Sports/exercising should be avoided for the first few days to weeks. It is important to take care of your skin according to its type; to promote healing, apply cream to the skin for about ten days. After that, the healing process should be complete. As long as there are still scaly patches on the skin, friction and make-up should be avoided.

How many sessions are necessary for scar correction?

The number of sessions always depends on the size and type of scar. Skin type and individual tendency to heal also play a role. During a detailed consultation, we will explain to you what costs you can expect. Generally, the sessions should be scheduled a few weeks apart.

When will the result be visible?

It is also impossible to say when the result of the laser treatment will be visible. While smaller, superficial scars can appear much more inconspicuous after just one session, it takes much longer for larger scars. It is not uncommon for up to five laser treatments to be necessary.

How much does the treatment cost?

We can only provide an exact cost breakdown after a detailed patient consultation. The final amount is based on several factors, such as the size and extent of the scar, the desired result and the selected laser.

What side effects can occur?

As long as the scar correction is carried out by an experienced team, as in our practice in Munich, there are no complications to worry about. Possible symptoms include:

  • Swelling,
  • Hypo- or hyperpigmentation of the skin,
  • Redness,
  • Scaling.

These symptoms are normal and should subside after two weeks or less.

Scar correction with PlexR® as an alternative

In addition to laser scar correction, Dr Duve also offers the PlexR® procedure. This treatment is based on plasma technology. A plasma pen is used to place points along the scar tissue where ionised gas is transferred to the tissue. The objective is to remove small bumps on the skin and smooth the tissue. This treatment is often combined with other therapies.
