What is sweat gland treatment with Botox® and how does it work?

Sweat gland treatment is used to treat specific areas of skin with excessive sweating, known as hyperhidrosis. Dr Duve uses the Botox® injection for this. The therapeutic agent botulinum toxin is injected into the specific areas of the body to stop the production of sweat in the corresponding sweat glands – this way, sweating can be prevented.

Who is the method suitable for?

The treatment is suitable for anyone who is affected by excessive sweat production. Whether hyperhidrosis is actually present is discussed in advance in a detailed treatment consultation. Generally, we can only speak of excessive sweating if it occurs even in situations without any exertion, great heat or excessive stress.

In which areas can the sweat gland treatment be applied?

Hyperhidrosis treatment with Botox® is mainly used in the following areas of the body:

  • Soles of the feet
  • Palms of the hands
  • Armpits
  • Genital area
  • Head and facial skin

What should be considered before the treatment?

No special preparation is necessary for the hyperhidrosis treatment. It is important to shave the armpits two to three days before the appointment if they are the treatment area. We also advise you to refrain from taking blood thinners for a few days before the treatment.

How does the hyperhidrosis treatment proceed?

After a detailed consultation with Dr Duve, a sweat gland test is carried out to identify overactive sweat glands. This is followed by the actual treatment. Generally, anaesthesia is not necessary as the injection causes little pain. On the palms of the hands and soles of the feet, the treatment is usually very uncomfortable, which is why we apply a strong anaesthetic cream if desired or recommend a local anaesthetic or even twilight sleep for patients who are very sensitive to pain.

What should I consider after the treatment?

There is nothing to worry about after the treatment. You can go home immediately afterwards and go about your usual business, with the exception of sports on the same day.

When is the result visible and how long does it last?

After two to seven days, excessive sweat production should have stopped. The result lasts seven to nine months, after which a follow-up treatment is recommended.

How much does the treatment cost?

The cost of hyperhidrosis treatment depends primarily on the treatment area. You can expect costs starting at EUR 600.

What are the risks of sweat gland treatment?

Sweat gland treatment is considered to be extremely low risk. There may be some redness or swelling as well as small bruises, but they should subside after a few days.

Answers from the expert Dr Duve

How many sessions are necessary for a satisfactory result?

Is the sweat gland treatment painful?

You do not have to expect severe pain during hyperhidrosis treatment, with the exception of the palms of the hands and soles of the feet. If you are particularly sensitive, especially on the palms of your hands or soles of your feet, a numbing cream or a local anaesthetic can be applied beforehand.

How much does the treatment with Botox® against excessive sweating cost?

The cost of sweat gland treatment starts from around EUR 600 and depends on the area to be treated.
